To and Fro
ceramic tile, 1 rpm motor, hardware, cast hydrocal fingers
14”x14”x10” 2002
To and Fro explores the delicate balance and the constantly shifting nature of human relationships. I used cast fingers from members of my community, those who supported me. The cast finger are attached to 1 rpm motors and slowly rise and fall. The motion is hypnotic and at times you question if it is actually moving. As the ceramic tile rocks back and forth, it slowly shifts its position, being supported precariously by the cast fingers of different people at different times. The viewer or gallery sitter must periodically reposition the tile or it would eventually fall off the edge.
