Must Man Search for Happiness?

“Must Man Search for Happiness?”

I read this on an advertisement as I biked home from work today, and I thought, no. We can also plant the seeds of happiness and watch them grow.

Hunting and gathering only got Man so far, agriculture has gotten us so much further. And so to will searching for happiness only get you so far. If you want to truly reap the rewards of happiness, you must plant the seeds and tend them while they grow.

So it got me thinking, what seeds of happiness am I planting (besides wheat seeds)? Many, many years ago (well not so many, maybe 5), I started down a path of self reflection and healing (aka therapy). It took lots of hard work to get here, but for the past year I have been enjoying a close relationship with my mother, which I never had before.

Today I planted a new seed. I sent an email reaching out to my father. I am terrified. I don’t know if the ground is fertile enough for the seeds to grow, but I must remind myself that even in the most barren wasteland, or on top of the most isolated mountain, a seed can grow. You may need to irrigate, or build a shelter, or install grow lamps, and sometimes you just need to give it shit till it cooperates (manure that is).

I’d love to hear from you about what seeds you have planted and how they have grown, or about what seeds you would like to plant.

(p.s. Okay, I know. In this context Glück really translates to luck. I didn’t realize this till later when I saw the Lotto logo in the corner, when I first read it I thought of they were asking if we must search for happiness. Maybe that is what they intended.)
